We are sorry that we have not posted on this blog for awhile. Yesterday, we went to Chen Zhi's house to meet up for IPW and discuss about our work. We have completed many things and I have been growing Bitter Gourd, from what i know, climbs. I have been taking pictures and will post some now

I have faced many difficulties while doing the project. The survey was one because it was quite hard getting people to take the survey and compiling the results. Everyone contributed. Chen Zhi and I are in charge of doing practical while Dino and Darius are in charge of the blog and research.

Week 11 reflection

I know that our project work will definitely benefit society as well as save the earth because planting more plants can lower the temperature of the earth and slow the speed of global warming.

I think we are taking the correct direction but the only thing is that we have to do more deeper research to fulfill the requirement.

I have learnt from the product that the product is not as easy to make as I had expected......

I would still have to consider the weeds growing too on the fence and as well as the facts that insects are also eating the plants.

Week 10 reflection

We have agreed to create a prototype using recycled materials to plant a plant on unused space. Such as fences. Planting plants on fences using recycled materials not only benefit us, but also benefits society. It recycles materials and beautifies the environment with greenery and flowers.(If we are planting flowering plant) So, we have decided to plant lady's finger as it is a flowering plant and can also produce food for us to eat.

week 12 individual reflection

I had difficulties finding the right kind of seeds to plant. There was also the issue of the time the seeds needed to start germinating. At first our group member,Darren ,complained that the seeds were taking too long to germinate. But eventually they did and they started growing well.

I supplied the equipment we would need to hang the plants(e.g wire,pliers). I also got rid of the weeds that were growing around the place we decided to hang our plants.

Summary

Making use of unused space for agriculture using recycled materials

When making our prototype of Lady's finger plant, first we planted the lady's finger seeds to allow it to germinate. Once it germinates, we first get recycled 1Litre water bottles (Mineral bottles etc.) Then, we cut one portion of the front and back of the water bottle. Use a cloth where water can seep out and cover one side of the cut sides to allow excess water to seep through. Then, add soil and plant your plant inside. Then, we used wires to tie the plant to a fence, as lady's finger is a climbing plant, the lady's finger plant will grow and “climb” up the fence. And in addition, the fence is an unused space, where the plants can “climb” up in peace, without getting disturbed.

week 11 reflection

The lady's finger we have planted has made progress and has started growing. Its stem is curling towards the fence where we are growing it when we paid it a little visit today. The plant has been watered and weeds around it have been cut. The worksheet for this week has been done by the group.

Progress:We have already hung 2 1.5 litre bottles filled with soil and plants onto the fence in a place in the school. Right now we are waiting to see if they will survive or die,but they have started twining themselves around the fence the last time we checked so they should do alright although the soil is drier than its supposed to be.

What I know about my project product:It is a twining,climbing kind of plant which twines its stem or tendrils around supports to grow.

What you think the direction your group should be taking:We should start growing more plants,and start work and research on the effect our product will have.

We still have not printed out the survey as we do not have anybody in the group who has a working printer although we are already starting to do the practical for the hydroponics growing.

We have started to discuss about what materials do we need and who is bringing what material. We have not yet decided which group of people to survey as we have been working on the set up of the hydroponics. As usual Chen Zhi shall be doing the worksheet, Darren will be the main researcher, I shall be managing the blog and helping Darren with the worksheet. Dino shall be either helping Chen Zhi with the worksheet or with Darren and I helping with the research.

We have decided that we needed one empty 1litre water bottle, soil, seeds for plants that grow on plants, wire and tools. We need it for planting a plant.

We have learnt that aeroponics is used to grow plants to save on the cost as aeroponics do not need soil. That way, we can grow healthier and cleaner plants without the use of soil.

Week 4 reflection

We found the generator to hard to do so we decided to do a change of projects.

Right now, we decided to go green with our school by planting or making our own vegetable garden at the school rooftop to lower the temperature of the school. Hopefully, we will not feel so hot as before. We are also planning to find how many vegetables we have to plant to lower the temperature by 1 degree celsius. And we have to see if it can survive the intense weather changes. We are planning to build a greenhouse to cover the vegetables incase of heavy raining. And we have to see if insect plays a part in the problem too.

What I know

I know that global warming is a slow, harmful threat to the Earth. It can kill all living things if nothing is done to stop it in a few hundred years. It takes a lot of effort to undo the done. But it is not impossible.

What I think

We have to lower the temperature of the Earth to prevent high temperatures from killing all living things in a few hundred years. So, we have to lower the carbon dioxide level on Earth. Or, We can increase oxygen level on Earth.

I want to find out exactly how many plants does it take to lower the temperature of the school by one minute. I also want to find out the exact time global warming will destroy the Earth.

Carbon dioxide traps the heat in the school. To get rid of the heat, we first have to get rid of all the carbon dioxide.

I also learning the vegetables are easier and faster to grow compared to other plants.

Ideas that I agree with…

I agree with saving the Earth by converting renewable resources to get electricity. I also agree with the idea to grow plants on the roof to lower the temperature of the school and we can even eat or sell the vegetables.

We have decided to stop the idea of the generator for the time being, and our teacher, Mr. Goh, suggested that we do a new project as the school is going green, and we have decided plant plants on the roof of the school.

On Week 1, we decided on our group name. Our group name is to be the Global Warming Defense Team. The first one we thought of was a generator, though we are still not sure about what to make. We will decide on our project shortly.

Week 4 Reflection

We have been given a change of project as Mr Goh has told us that the school is going green. We have decided on doing a rooftop garden. I have found out that having a rooftop garden will Improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions and insulate to school buildings to keep us cool and maybe, just maybe we can stop the using of electric fans to decrease energy consumption in the school. Chen Zhi shall be posting up the worksheet soon.

Another thing we have to think of is what kind of plants to plant at the rooftop and who is going to tend the plants after we leave the school?
